Ondiri-Swamp in Kenya
Detailed Information
Listing Description

Ondiri Swamp is located in the outskirts of Kikuyu town in Kiambu County. It is the largest known wetland in Africa after Doula in Cameroon. It empties its waters at Lake Naivasha. The source of Ondiri Swamp is Nyongara River that later flows to join Nairobi River.

It is believed to be a lake that degraded to a swamp due to excess human activity by soil erosion, siltation and pollution. Locals however still use its water for recreation, farming and even domestic use. Others go there to enjoy the serenity of the place or for meditation.

Due to the swamp being under threat, environmentalists are pushing for the swamp to be gazetted as a wetland to ensure its conservation.
