Lumo Wildlife Sanctuary
[TheChamp-Sharing]Lumo wildlife-sanctuary is a privately owned wildlife-sanctuary located near Mwatate in Taita-Taveta County. It was formed in 1997 when three community-owned “ranches” namely Lualenyi, Mramba and Oza who agreed to set aside 40,000 hectares of their land for wildlife conservation.
The community at LUMO wildlife-sanctuary is adjacent to Tsavo West National Park and the Taita Hills wildlife-sanctuary, and serves as a vital wildlife corridor between Tsavo West and Tsavo East National Parks.
Wildlife here includes; the cape buffalo, elephant, leopard, Masai lion, Masai giraffe, zebra, hartebeest, impala, waterbuck, Thomson’s gazelle, lesser kudu, dik-dik and other smaller animals, including a great diversity of birdlife.
The community has been able to use elephant dung to creatively come up with the following products.
