Listing Description

Buffalo Springs National Reserve is located in Isiolo County in Northern Kenya and was established in 1948 as part of Isiolo Game Reserve.  It is separated from Samburu National Reserve by the Ewaso Ngiro river. The present boundaries of the reserve were established in 1985.

It is described as a gentle rolling lowland of plain old lava flows and volcanic soils of olivine basalt.  Vegetation includes; scattered grass, shrubs, alkaline grassland with occasional desert rose. There are occasional springs and swamps and a narrow band of riverine forest along the Ewaso Ngiro which includes Tana River.

Wildlife in Buffalo Springs National Reserve includes the common zebra and the endangered Grevy Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe, elephant, oryx, generuk, lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena and of course, the Buffalo.  There are over 365 species of birds which includes the Somali Ostrich recognized by their indigo legs and neck and which are larger than the Maasai Ostrich.  The river here is home to hippos and crocodiles.
