Mau Mau Caves Kenya
Detailed Information
Listing Description

The Mau Mau caves is a historic site that was once used as a hide out by the Kenyan Freedom Fighters during the Mau Mau uprising of the year 1952 – 1960.  The caves are located in Nanyuki in Laikipia County deep in the Mount Kenya Forest Reserve.

The British forces bombed the caves in 1959 after the location was obtained by the Land and Freedom Army and many lives were lost during the bombardment.  Some of their remains can still be seen amongst the rubble.

In 2003, the Mau Mau Caves were gazetted by the National museums of Kenya and declared a national monument.

Now a tranquil environment, it offers a complimentary setting as a tourist and historic site.
