Lamu Old Town Kenya
Detailed Information
Listing Description

Lamu Old Town or Lamu Town which forms a major part of Lamu county is the oldest and well preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa. It is built on coral stone and mangrove timber and is set apart from other towns at the Kenyan coast by the minimalism of structural forms of unique architecture and the interior décor known for its exceptional unique wood carving.

This cultural town has hosted a vast number of Muslim festivities since the 19th century and in the recent years has played host to secular events such as the Lamu Cultural Festival which celebrates the unique Swahili heritage.

Lamu’s history dates back from the Portuguese invasion in 1506 which was triggered by the nation’s thriving mission to control trade along the coast of the Indian Ocean. Driven by the Turkish raids by the Portuguese in 1580, Lamu led a revolution. They were later given overwhelming support by the Oman in 1652 to finally triumph over the Portuguese. The years of Omani rule was what is marked as Lamu’s Golden Age.

Walking is the best way to explore Lamu Old Town as nearly everything is a stone’s throw away. Carry a flash light at night as the streets are not well lit.
