Kisumu Impala Sanctuary, as the name suggests, is a sanctuary mainly dedicated to the preservation of animals which require special protection with a focus mainly on Impalas.  The sanctuary has an animal orphanage which contains a collection of caged animals such as the lion, leopard, baboon, hyena, jackal, buffalo, cheetah, bushbuck and the Sykes monkey.  However, the hippos enjoy open grazing as the sitatunga antelope is believed to exist in the nearby swamps.  There is also has an astonishing 115 number of species of birds recorded in the sanctuary.

In terms of vegetation cover, the landscape is dominated by Terminalia Brownli and the Fig Tree.

Features 

The Kisumu Impala Sactuary lies next to Hippo Point and features 3Km of nature trails and a selection of picnic sites.  These picnic sites are; Sunset, Albizia, Impala, Baboon and Fig tree all offering an amazing view of the lake.

Sundowner View Point is the name of the place that one gets a fantastic view of sunset in the evening.

Accommodation

Accommodation options at Kisumu Impala Sanctuary include;

  • Designated campsites under the cool shade of indigenous trees.  The campsite also offers self catering kitchen and shower rooms.
  • Lake Victoria Impala Lodge – This is a 24 bed capacity ecolodge situated inside the sanctuary which offers state of the art accommodation to the sanctuary visitors. The ecolodge also has a restaurant where food and drinks are served
  • The sanctuary has a campsite named State lodge campsite and tents are available on hire
  • The sanctuary also borders the Park view apartments, Sunset hotel, Kiboko Bay hotel etc.

Transport

It takes both air and road to get to Kisumu city.

The presence of Lake Victoria in this area also means that depending on original location of persons wishing to visit Kisumu, they also have an option to travel by water to get to Kisumu via Kendu Bay , Homa Bay and Mvita.

Kisumu Impala Sanctuary is under the management of Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS)
